Glass Care

Glass CareDid you just install new glass in you home or business? You want to get as much life out of it as possible, but how to take care of it to insure that you do? The first step in caring for your glass is to make sure it is handled right. If it is handled wrong, it can result in breakage, chips, and scratches that will mar your new glass. If the glass you are wanting to care for is a decorative piece, then you will want to use a wooden or plastic stand to display your piece.

Before you clean your glass, you should always read any labels that the manufacturer has placed on your windows. As soon as the glass has been installed, you should remove any labels and adhesive on them. This will prevent possible thermal damage and label staining. Never allow any paint or plaster to splash or run onto the glass. If it does happen, then you need to clean it off immediately while it is still soft. If there is any cement, mortar, or plaster dust present from remodeling, then water shouldn't be allowed to flow over the glass.

Rinse any dirt off of the glass with plenty of clean water before washing them with warm water and mild soap or a proper glass cleaner. You should only use a soft, clean cloth or sponge and make sure it doesn't have any grit on it. Rinse your window clean before you use a clean squeegee to dry the surface. You will also want it to be free of grit. Never use any harsh abrasive cleaners, solvents, or alkaline on your windows. Don't allow the water from your sprinkler system to be left on the glass to dry naturally.

Glass cleaning productsNever, ever use metal scrapers or blades to remove dirt or other materials from your glass. It can permanently damage the surface.

Ironically, water is responsible for the majority of damage seen on glass. When it comes into contact with your glass, it can cause the sodium atoms in the glass to trade places with the hydrogen atoms in the water. This will leave your glass with too many calcium atoms and they can react to the carbon dioxide in the air. This can form an insoluble residue on your glass and eventually cause visible defects on the surface of your glass.

It is very important to care for and clean your glass properly so that it will retain its clarity and prolong its life as long as possible. You don't want to have cloudy or stained looking glass for your windows. Follow the tips above and you should have clear, beautiful windows for years to come.
