There are many ways to make glass, it just depends on what type of glass you are using, as well as what you want to make. When making glass it is a very fine science to get the balance of the various components together, because not only have you got the basics such as sand you need to think about what compounds you will add to create the colour. One chemical will be a fixed alkaline, soda being the most common, and sometimes with a metallic oxide, litharge or a lead being common. These along with sand and other things can make up glass.
When making glass, the materials must first become a powder then be melted together.
To make glass or in this case fused quartz or fused silica, it is melted at around 2000 degrees C. You can use an electrically heated furnace or a gas fueled furnace. Once melted, the material will have a translucent or opaque look, if it is opaque then it will be becuase of air bubbles trapped in the material.
Synthetic silica is a rich chemical precursor that usually involves chemical gasification of silicon. The oxidation of this gas to silicon dioxide and thermal fusion will get a dust result. You can alter this process but the result is transparent glass that allows light to flow through it.
Synthetic fused silica comes in powder form and is used in different things, such as: filler for rubbers and plastics, coatings, adhesives, cements, sealants, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, inks and abrasives.
Now that you have a powder, you sift out coarse parts and mix silex and flux together, put in furnace, and heat for five to six hours, stirring it often during this process, the final material is called frit. It is then easily converted to glass by pounding it out and vitrifying it in a glass melting pot. It is while it's in this state that you can change the colour and change the shape, making different objects.
Making glass is a time consuming process, but then when the piece is made it can either be sold on or you could create an individual piece. You can do anything you want with glass if you have the right tools and time, but first make sure you know everything there is to know about the ingredients to make the glass in the beginning it will save you time and money.
